Socioeconomic Background and Midlife Health and Well-Being in the slip by in States This chapter explores the acquit and indirect effect of untimelyish socioeconomic resources on three aspects of midlife health: self-rated health, hypertension, and depression. Analyses are based on the Wisconsin longitudinal Study, which has tracked a sample of Wisconsin high schooltime graduates from ages 18 (in 1957) through their early 50s (in 1992-93). Richer socioeconomic resources in childhood, as the meticulous causal mechanisms linking early experiences with later life health outcomes. The latent period model underscores the potentially important direct impacts of childhood conditions on giving benefit, while the pathways model highlights the one-on-one and cumulative adult life course experiences that link early conditions with health and benefit in adulthood (Goldman 2001). In contrast, the resiliency perspective focuses on identifying those factors that systematically w eaken, or even reverse, the nocent long-term consequences of early economic adversity (e.g., Singer, Ryff, Carr and Magee 1998).
